3. Diagram 1 below illustrates the emission line spectrum of neutral Sodium (taken from the web site at http:/umop.newspectra/spectrum.phip that you used in the Studio Labs. It is split into 2 parts to make the wavelength scale at the top readable, with an overlap from 450 to 500 nm. MRTY 1031 Assignment 1 19/3/23 Diagram 1 Diagram 2 shows the lower energy levels of Sodium and the 'allowed electron transitions. The Sodium atom has the n = 1 and 2 levels filled with two electrons, with one electron in n =3. The outer electron can be considered to be shielded from the nucleus by the inner electrons, so it sees approximately just one net positive charge. Sodium could therefore be expected to have energy levels close to those of hydrogen. This is true for higher / values 2 and 3 (d and f sub-shells), but less so for the / = 0 or 1 (s and p sub-shells). This is illustrated on the right of diagram 2. in- infinity Energy levels sodium electron -2. Energy, ev Hydrogen Levels -5: 36 Diagram 2 (a] Estimate the wavelengths of at least 10 lines in the spectrum in diagram 1, and then calculate the line energy in ev of all those lines. (b) Using these energies, identify which transition in diagram 2 corresponds to each spectral line. This will require you to carefully estimate the energy difference associated with each transition in diagram 2. Note that not all the spectral lines in diagram 1 are seen in the transitions in diagram 2. In that case simply write "unidentified"- Also, not all the transitions in diagram 2 are seen in the spectral lines in diagram 1.A line at 819.1 nm - not in diagram 1 - is shown in the Table below as an example. Complete this Table using at least 10 lines in the spectrum in diagram 1.
