3. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 bans discrimination in pay and other compensation based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. And the Egual Pay Act of 1963 makes it illegal for employers to pay men and women different wages for doing the same job (except to the extent that wage differentials are based on seniority, merit, or factors "other than sex"). Yet, half a century later, there is still a wage gap. In 2014, the national median earnings for women working fulltime, year round was $37,1 10, or 79 percent of what men working fulltime, year round earned. The wage gap was even greater for African American women (60 cents for every dollar) and Latinas (55 percent of what men earn.) An April 20 16 report by the Joint Economic Committee Democratic Staff of the US. Congress predicted that the gap will not close until 2059. Research: (a) Locate the 2016 report and see what you can find out about your state, and the impact of the wage gap as women age. (b) The proposed Paycheck Fairness Act calls for voluntary guidelines to help employers evaluate jobsand paymore fairly. A proposed Equal Pay Report would require large federal contractors and employers with more than 100 employees to report total W-2 earnings for each job category along with total hours worked by race, ethnicity, and seX.
