3c. Recently, Terry Odean (the behavioral finance guru) and the manager of an actively managed mutual fund appeared on CNBC. During the interview, Odean commented that his research suggests that the stock market is very efficient and that investors (including fund managers) mislead themselves into thinking that they can beat the market and are overconfident about their capability for doing so. When asked about Odean's comments, the fund manager replied that Odean's research was old (Odean studied the period 1987 to 1993) and, thus, does not apply today. In addition, he commented that more and different information is available for investors and fund managers today than was available during the period of Odean's study. This additional information enables investors to predict the market. Using the efficient market hypothesis, assess the validity of the fund manager's analysis (is he right?) that Odean's study is irrelevant because new and different information is available today.
