What do you mean, probably?" Jasmine knows Emily has a successful track record with several startups, but she's not going to start pouring money into a probable outcome. "Well, I've worked with Kiaan before. He did a great job developing a C# app I needed. He runs a team of developers in India who consistently produce high-quality work. But he's busier now, and his business has really grown. He's also located in India." "Emily, this makes me nervous. I don't know anything about doing business in India. What if the guy takes our money and runs? What do we do then?" Jasmine says emphatically. O + "Well, we pay as we go, and we can always switch development teams if we run into issues. That would be painful, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. Honestly, I don't think it will be a problem. He's been very reliable in the past." "India is a long way away. What if he gives our code to somebody else? Or our ideas? What if we find some horrible bug in his code and we OPEN can't find him to fix it? What if he gets two-thirds done and then goes to work on someone else's project?" Jasmine is on a roll. "All are risks, I agree. But it will cost you four to six times as much to develop over here." Emily says as she shrugs her shoulders. "Outsourcing the development of a strategic application seems risky," Jasmine says, shaking her head. Emily sees the worry on Jasmine's face. "It is risky. Well, riskier than hiring local developers. But there's still risk involved with local developers. Do you want me to look into hiring local developers?" O "Outsourcing the development of a strategic application seems risky." Source: Panchenko Vladimir/Shutterstock + Jasmine pauses and looks thoughtfully at the table. "No, I think outsourcing to India might be our best option. Well, at least the option we can afford right now. Emily, will you arrange a meeting with Kiaan? I'd like all three of us there to hear what he says." OPEN "Sure, I'll call him tomorrow. There's a 9-hour difference between Florida and India. It's 10:00 PM in India right now. I won't be able to get a bid from him because I haven't finished the requirements documents yet. I should have those in a few days," Emily says while making a note for herself on her phone. "Good, and will you also get a bid from a local development shop? I want to see what the difference is going to be if we decide to outsource this." "Absolutely. There's just one problem. The local developer may outsource the work anyway." You mean we might be paying Kiaan either way?" Emily smiles. "Unfortunately, yes. Well ... maybe not. Honestly, I'm not sure. We'll see." "Developers, we need more developers to handle the data integration from the loT medical devices, integrate with Tampa General Hospital's systems, develop the online dashboards for users, build out our back-end systems, and help code the machine learning side," Emily says reluctantly to Jasmine. "How many developers are you talking about?" Jasmine asks. Emily clears her throat, "Well, quite a few. It turns out that loT medical devices are so new that there's no industry-wide standardization. We're probably going to need a different interface for each device. Each manufacturer has its own software development kit and wants you O to develop for its platform. Developing apps for smartwatches is fairly straightforward. But interfaces for devices like oximeters, blood pressure monitors, glucose monitors, and smart scales will be more difficult to develop. It will be harder to find people who know how to + develop apps for those types of devices." Jasmine shifts in her chair and leans forward. "How would that work?" OPEN Emily motions to her smartphone. "Essentially we'd make the iMed mobile app capable of connecting via Bluetooth to each loT medical device. The medical device sends data to our iMed app and then back to us for analysis. From there we can share it with hospitals or doctors or make it available through the online patient dashboard. But, again, we'll need additional developers for our back-end system and web interface and to help Jose with the machine learning development piece." "Wow, OK, how much is this going to cost?" Jasmine asks, surprised. "Not as much as you might think," Jose interjects. "I have several friends from grad school who can help with the machine learning side. We could outsource some of the heavy lifting to them. They'll like the extra income." "Speaking of outsourcing," Emily says cautiously, "when I was working in the hospitality industry, we would outsource our application development to India. We saved a ton of money. I know a guy in India named Kiaan who could probably do all of our app work as well as the back-end system, web interface, and integration with Tampa General." "Probably?
