4.4.3 Practice: Modeling: Solids Practice Assignment Geometry Sem 2 (S3990682) Archis Chinmulgund Points possible: 20 Date: ____________ YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Solid Art Your Selections You meet an artist who makes sculptures out of Platonic solids. Being an excellent geometer who knows how to use nets to create solid figures, you are intrigued and want to make your own models. 1. Which solid did you select? (Circle one.) (2 points) Octahedron Icosahedron Construct Your Model Nets are two-dimensional patterns that fold into 3-dimensional shapes, and so they are a great tool for analyzing and constructing solids. Let's look at the ones you will use. Use the tetrahedron, octahedron and the icosahedron tools to help you examine each shape more closely, and to practice folding each net into a solid. 2. Which nets will you need to print to construct your model? How many copies of each net will you need? (8 points: 2 points for each solid and 2 points for the correct number of copies) 3. Your model has a central solid and then numerous solids attached to it. How many faces, edges and vertices does your central solid have? (3 points: 1 point for each measure) 4. Using the link on the activity page, print and cut out the nets, and build your model. Construct the central solid and then attach the tetrahedrons onto each face. (4 points) Examining Your Model Now you have your model. Let's look at it to learn more. 5. How many faces does your new model have? Without counting, how could you determine the number? (5 points: 3 points for the correct response, 2 points for an explanation) Copyright 2015 Apex Learning Inc. Use of this material is subject to Apex Learning's Terms of Use .
