5. A steel prismatic rod machined on a lathe is 450mm in length. The first 300mm length of the rod has a cross sectional area of 20mm while the remaining 150mm has a cross sectional area of 10mm. The 20mm end is held rigidly fixed. A 30kN load is applied axially at a distance of 150mm from the fixed end so that it creates tension in the rod. A 15kN load is also applied axially and in the same direction (as the 30kN load) at the free end where the cross sectional area is 10mm. The Young's modulus value of the material for the rod is 200GPa. In your answer: a) Sketch the appropriate finite element model giving a reason for your choice of element. (9 marks) b) Using the finite element method calculate the displacement at each node of your finite element model. c) Calculate the strains and stresses in the different regions of the bar model.
