5. According to UN Habitat Humanity (2015), the number of informal settlements/slums is on the rise. The Report argues that informal settlements are caused by many factors including population growth and rural-urban migration; lack of affordable housing for the urban poor; and unemployment. Indeed researchers find that the growth of informal settlements (or slums) exerts great pressure on already struggling health and education systems, while making housing delivery a challenge.
