5" Natural Gas Consumption in Philadelphia: A utility company sells natural gas to homes in the Philadelphia area. This company relies on "meter readers" who visit the homes and read the meter to determine the house consumption of natural gas. Many of these homes are older homes that have the gas meter in the basement. Unless someone is home to let the meter reader inside in order to read the meter, the utility company has to estimate the amount of natural gas consumed. The utility company hired you to help them estimate the natural gas consumption for these homes. To do that you decided to run a regression of the natural gas consumption in hundred cubic feet (CCF) consumed during the billing period (which is usually a month) on the average number of degrees below 65 during the billing period (the explanatory variable). The utility company has 4 years of data, which you decided to use. The Philly Gas Consumption Data file posted on Campus Web has these data. Use this file to answer the following questions: Run a regression of the natural gas consumption on the average number of degrees below 65 and write down your estimated equation? What does the intercept mean? Is it significant? What does the slope mean? Is it significant? During one billing period, the average temperature was 55 , based on your estimated model what do you expect the natural gas consumption to be in this billing period
