5. To complement their new business center, the Mustang plans to open a food court. Restaurateurs are concerned that if they open too many establishments they will suffer losses. At the same time, the citizens of the town are complaining that they don't have many food options, the wait times are long, and the current restaurants are too crowded. The town commissions a cost-benefit study, which results in the following data. Assume a restaurant costs $3,750 per day to own and operate. Note: This problem assumes that social cost and private cost are the same. a. Based on the cost-benefit table provided, determine (i) the socially optimal number of restaurants and (ii) the number of restaurants that you would expect to see opening (i.e., if social benefits are ignored in favor of private benefits). In addition to providing your answer in a tabular form, which will include calculations of marginal benefit and cost for each of the above scenarios, use excel (or equivalent) or hand-drawn graphs to show the socially optimal number of restaurants (i) and number of restaurants that would open if only private benefit were considered (ii). Clearly label your graphs and indicate how you aranhicallv determined the number of restaurants for each case. [23 points totall b.
