5. Complete Forms

Once you have determined the mood and the figure of a standard-form categorical syllogism, you have all the information needed to analyze the formof the argument. Usually, the form of a categorical syllogism is designated by simply stating the mood and figure together (with a hyphen between the mood and figure). For example, "EIO-2" would be used to designate the full form of a categorical syllogism of mood EIOand of figure 2. With this information, you know the type of proposition that is used for each of the argument's premises and for its conclusion, and you know the position of each of the syllogism's three terms.

Examine each of the following standard-form categorical syllogisms. Determine the full form of each argument and enter it into the spaces provided. (Note: The hyphen has already been provided between the mood and figure, so you will need to fill in two spacesmood to the left of the hyphen and figure to the rightin order to specify the full form.)

Example 1

Major Premise:	All animals with hearts are animals with lungs.
Minor Premise:	All mammals are animals with hearts.
Conclusion:	Some mammals are animals with lungs.
