6. (14%) The HKSAR Government has launched an employment support scheme, i.e., it has been providing wage subsidies to eligible employers to retain employees. The subsidy is for a period of 6 months from June to November 2020. The subsidy is calculated based on 50% of wages paid to employees in a month, capped at HK$18,000 per month (i.e., the monthly subsidy is capped at HK$9,000 per employee). Some people do not agree to this scheme. In their view, there is a growing awareness of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the corporate sector and in the society. Companies actively implementing CSR are rewarded in stock markets and in business revenues. Keeping employees with corporate retained earnings may be a viable way to show CSR and keep morale of the employees. Providing employment subsidy in a free economy like Hong Kong may be a waste of public resources. Do you agree? Why or why not
