6. Canada abides by its international obligations to protect human rights both domestically and abroad. 1. .2. ....... .3. 4. 5. .6. 7. 9. -.... . 10 One of Canada's main focuses are peacekeeping. As a country, we are part of six international human rights treaties including; The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; The International Covenant in Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination; The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women; The Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and finally the Convention on the Right of the Child. Each of these treaties are made up of established bodies who were chosen from State Parties from various conventions. Canada became part of these treaties when it was noticed they had made major improvement of their human rights domestically. Canada also focuses on international peacekeeping missions. Between 1993 and 1995, Canada was one of the leading contributors with the United Nations peacekeeping missions in Rwanda. An example of a peacekeeping mission in Rwanda was when Canada helped to disarm the attacks of the Rwandan genocide, although Canadian Major-General Romeo Dallaire was not able to prevent the deaths of 800 000 Rwanda citizens. Since the genocide, Canadian peacekeeping troops have continuously traveled to Rwanda to restore order and give any help possible to the country. The reason my mark for this category is an 8/10 is because it seems as if Canada spends more time protecting human rights abroad than they do domestically. The Canadian peacekeeping troops spend most of their time overseas, and they don't notice the human rights Issues and violations we have in North America
