(6) On p. 80, Sandbu states the following consequentialist argument in defense of profit maximization: Moral premise (consequentialism): We ought to choose the actions that produce the best effects for society. Empirical premise: Aiming exclusively at maximizing profits produces the best effects. Conclusion: Therefore, business people ought to aim exclusively at maximizing profits. According to Sandbu, the empirical premise is often false. Why? Consider what Sandbu says about externalities, information problems and cooperation/commitment problems.
