Can we improve the response rate in a mail survey? _l_n___ord_e_r__to_ study this question, an experiment was tested with 1,178 students divided into three groups. A first group received a preliminary letter regarding the investigation which they would receive by mail. For the second group, we made a telephone contact to explain to them that they would be contacted by mail for an investigation. Finally, no preliminary contact was made with members of the third group. A positive response means that the survey was returned in less than two weeks. Here are the results of the experiment: Intervention Rponse Lettre Tlphone Rien Oui 171 146 118 Non 220 68 455 Total 391 214 5 73 a) We want to test the hypothesis that the interventions are unnecessary to modify the response rate. Clearly defining your notation, write the null and alternative hypotheses for such test. b) Make an adequate graphical representation for this data. c) Take the appropriate test for the hypotheses in a). What is your conclusion? d) Reaching people by phone is much more expensive than sending them a letter. On the other hand, we can expect that if we contact them first, there will be an improvement response rate. Is there a statistically significant difference between the response rate among those who have received a letter before and those who have neither received a letter nor a call prior telephone? e) Give a 95% confidence interval for the difference between the response rate of those contacted by phone rather than letter
