9:05 Ill 5G 4 Norm Violation Assignment To explore the power of social norms, you are asked to complete this participant-observation assignment. Part I: Violate a Social Norm As mentioned in the textbook, norms are prescriptions for accepted or expected behaviors. Your assignment is to violate one of the seven norms listed below: 1. Don't hold a door for someone behind you or hold it way before they are there and tell them to "hurry up". 2. Pretend to use the bathroom in public and leave without washing your hands (You will need an observer to work with you and let you know how the other people respond after you've left). 3. Try to look at a stranger's phone while they are engrossed in it. 4. Continuously jump up and down while waiting in a check-out line at a grocery store or other store. 5. Randomly talk to strangers who look like they are busy. 6. Break rules for eye contact - Make eye contact for too long or too little or even talk to others while looking at their forehead or ear. Stare at strangers walking past on the sidewalk. Blink excessively. 7. Dress inappropriately (but not breaking dress codes for your school or work) - Dress too fancy, or dress for a different season. 8. Giving someone (preferably a stranger) a small bit of money - out of the blue 9. Paying for someone else's items who is in line behind you. roanokechowan.mrooms.net Private
