A 55 cm long journal bearing is lubricated with oil with a dynamic viscosity of 0.1 Pa-s at 20oC and 0.008 kg/m-s at the expected steady operating temperature of 80oC. The shaft has a diameter of 3.1496 inches and an average gap of 0.08 cm between it and the journal. The shaft is rotating at a constant speed of 1500 rpm.

Calculate the torque required to:

(a) overcome initial bearing friction (15 points) and (b) run smoothly at a constant operating temperature (15 points)
