A bookshop owner decides that setting up a book club would be beneficial for her business and for the community. She wants to investigate the workload involved in running a book club and the opportunities that having book club could bring. The bookshop is situated on the high street of a city and has excellent footfall (that is, potential customers passing by). As well as selling books, the shop also sells stationery and gifts. The bookshop has a small caf, which could be used for meetings. The caf could also supply tea, coffee and soft drinks for the meetings. The bookshop and caf open late on Thursdays, so this would be an ideal evening for the book club to meet. The plan is for members to be able to attend book club meetings, either in person or via Zoom. That would enable more busy people to attend, and also support those less able to leave their homes due to illness, childcare responsibilities, and other reasons. To encourage membership, the plan is that a discount could be offered on the selected books to the book club members. The bookshop can negotiate deals with the publishers if buying books in bulk. Actual membership of the book club is free and people can attend meetings when they wish. Inviting authors of selected books to attend the book club meetings in person or via Zoom might be arranged by liaising with the publisher - that would be seen as an added attraction. You can assume the following: A book club works on the basis of a group of people deciding to read a selected book by a specified date and then meeting up to discuss their opinions of the book. At the end of the meeting, the individual members give their marks of 10 for the book. Typically, a book club meets once a month. The book club organiser communicates the details of meetings with book club members by email. Advertisements are posted up in the bookshop window and in the bookshop's caf informing passers-by and customers about the book club's existence and its next meeting. The next book to be read for the following month is chosen by the organiser selecting three candidate books and then the book club members voting. The book which gains the most votes, becomes the next book. This process is carried out using email. 2a) Imagine that the bookshop owner has asked you to be book club organiser and devise a plan to set up and run the book club, which you are to present to her. Create a work breakdown structure (WBS) for the activities/processes involved in running the book club. That is, from accepting new members to the ongoing operation of the book club. State any assumptions that you decide to make. As a guide, you should attempt to identify approximately 25 activities in your WBS. Hint: In order to identify activities/processes, it might be helpful to identify the stakeholders and the deliverables involved. Also, to think about the chronological requirements across a month in running the book club. Your WBS can be presented as a hierarchical diagram or as an indented list. 2b) Draw up a Product Breakdown Structure (PBS) for the book club plan. 2c) Identify five benefits that could result from setting up the book club.
