A bridge pier carrying a load of 30MN has a plan area of 15.0m6.0m. The soil profile consists of 3m recently placed loose sand fill supported by a 7m thick layer of soft clay with shear strength of su=30kPa. Beneath the clay, there is a thick dense sand that has an average cone resistance qc=15MPa. (Note: You should consider a pile group) Provide a design solution assuming driven concrete precast piles of dimension 0.3m0.3 m and that a typical pile will pass the slow static test. Support Information Correlation between shear strength parameter , cone penetration resistance and effective overburden pressure. (Reproduced from H.T. Durgunoglu and J.K. Mitchell (1975) Proceedings of Conference on In-Situ Measurement of Soil Properties, by permission of the American Society of Civil Engineers.) Note The end unit bearing resistance in sand can be estimated as the average cone penetration resistance near the end of the pile. A bridge pier carrying a load of 30MN has a plan area of 15.0m6.0m.
