A case-control study of risk factors for incident myocardial infarction (MI) was conducted on 1204 MI patients and 1538 controls born in Sweden between 1922-49. A questionnaire was administered to all cases and controls asking detailed information on occupation, work titles and work tasks throughout their working life. Socioeconomic position was coded for each individual on the basis of their occupations and the proportion of each subject's life spent in adverse socioeconomic positions was calculated. The cumulative number of years spent in an adverse socioeconomic position over each individual's lifetime was evaluated as the exposure. The odds for likelihood of being a case for each additional year spent in an adverse socioeconomic position was 1.7 (p=0.01).
