A certain municipality experiences drastic water shortages due to draught and water purification plant decay. You are the Maintenance Manager of the water purification plant. One of your tasks as a Manager is to oversee a maintenance project to increase equipment availability. The plant has been having problems with the supply of fresh water, water purification products and repeated breakdown of the pumps and other mechanical and electrical equipment needed to run the facility.

You are given 30 days and a budget of R5 million for the maintenance project. In your project you will service and overhaul old equipment; and introduce new upgraded equipment. You also decide to implement Reliability Centered Maintenance.
Your task for this portfolio-type assignment is to write a technical report that demonstrates how you would co-ordinate and execute the entire project. Your report should highlight the following topics covered in the module:
 Project Management: Use the WBS to plan for your project, indicating all equipment involved, maintenance activities, human resource and all costs;·
 Networks for Projects: Prepare a network diagram for all activities in your project;·
 Reliability Centered Maintenance: Follow the RCM implementation process, apply it in your project and report it in detail. For example an RCM analysis on the equipment identified. Acquire failure data, identify measurement tools to be used and indicate how you will measure performance. Provide sample forms used;·
 Inventory Management: Decide upon the best practice in inventory management. Stipulate and justify the method you will adopt. Which spares do you decide to keep in your stores, costs and why.·
 Contract Management: You will hire contractors to perform some of the work in your project. What are the legal requirements and the formation of your maintenance contract? Justify the procedure followed in managing the contracts. How will the contractors be paid and justify.·

 Financial resources: Manage the above-mentioned budget between all personnel, contractors, equipment spares, mechanical work to be done and the purchasing of new upgraded equipment. Provide details of your budget and provide motivations for overspending and under-spending.·

 Human Errors: You have identified that about 30% of the equipment failures are due to human errors. What are the causes of human errors, what are the consequences of the errors and how are you planning to address them? How have you considered safety and risk management in this project? Indicate the budget spent to address human errors.·
