A chief information security officer, or CISO, is responsible for information security for an entire business or organization. This person must have a deep understanding of both the business aspects of an organisation as well as information security. CISOs possess a vision of the enterprise and the ability to develop sound strategies, to ensure that information assets and technologies are protected.

Although a CISO typically has a bachelor's or even a master's degree, many information security certifications are valuable to aspiring CISOs. These credentials are always at the advanced or senior level, but many a CISO has started at the bottom rung of a certification ladder and climbed their way up. Most CISO-related certifications are vendor-neutral, although some are specific to vendors.
