Correctional community justice emphasizes the importance of maintaining family ties through visitation programs.Would video visitation be an effective way to preserve family ties?Yes, it would be an effective way to strengthen family ties and keep communication with close friends. Some inmates do not have the luxury of having in-person visitors for various reasons such as their visitors may not be able to afford it, they live too far away or have transportation issues, their schedules conflict with the in-person visiting times and days, or they could feel an extreme amount of intimidation to enter a jail or prison facility. Unbeknown when one advocate for the severe treatment of inmates unbeknown they may be advocating for the future victimization of others (Wright, 2015). The implementation of video visitation could be a temporary solution or a more permanent solution to minor issues that family and close friends experience when a loved one is behind bars.

Why or why not?

It cuts back on family and friends having to drive long hours to a facility, and it helps with social distancing; it is faster and more accessible for everyone involved. There will not be the need for body searches or having a big, intimidating dog sniff your body before you can enter the waiting area to visit with your loved one. With the implementation of video visits, gone are the days of waiting weeks for a letter or hoping for a 15-minute phone call conversation if the inmate is lucky enough after patiently standing in line to get a chance to speak on the phone.

What are some of the benefits and/or challenges of this proposal?

Some of the added benefits of video visitation are that it removes several of the currently implemented barriers, such as reducing staffing costs and making it easier for the offender's families when children are involved (Wright, 2015). The implementation of video visitation could change several things as far as how the court system can improve the way we punish criminal offenders. The most important benefit is so that the inmate can feel supported. The support can aid in a positive outcome for everyone when the criminal offender returns to society. Another advantage is that video visits support the technology industry.

One of the proposed challenges is the considerable concern that the visits provide a luxury service to the incarcerated inmate. A luxury that some individuals feel should not be warranted. Opponents argue that the videos will get in the way of actual face to face visits, that the video service could be utilized as a way to exploit the offenders family financially and that the reliance on platforms that are not up to par to deliver the type of connection needed will create a burden on everyone involved (Wright, 2015). Individuals proposed don't want to improve inmates' experiences and may think of inmates as "other" human beings and feel they are different from us. They are heavily implying that inmates are undeserving of their basic privileges and rights. As it's more than likely more convenient that the opposed separate themselves from convicted inmates and have a strong desire that they are punished in the worst ways legally possible. Another challenge is that video visits may reduce the income generated from phone calls.

What other ways could incarcerated inmates maintain ties to the family and community from which they have been divided?

There are three primary forms of communication available to prisoners: letters, visits, and phone calls.Other ways incarcerated inmates could maintain ties to their family and the community from which they have been divided are to continue writing letters and calling when allowed. I have heard that Maricopa county now will enable inmates to email their loved ones through a third-party program. I have listened to it through the program, and the inmate can receive digital pictures and emails. Incarcerated inmates are not provided many options for communication, and there isn't any way to get creative.

The reading and lecture also discuss how women face special challenges for reintegration.Would video visitation be beneficial to women in particular?

I think video visitation would be helpful to women. When an offender is locked up, they are not the only individuals affected. Their entire families become involved, and more importantly, their children become deeply affected. Furthermore, prisoners who maintain close contact with their family members while incarcerated have better post-release outcomes and lower recidivism rates. Family members can be valuable sources of support during incarceration and after release.

Why or why not?

I believe that women communicate and connect with their family and friends differently than their male counterparts. The implementation of video visitation might be critical to mending, maintaining, and developing personal relationships. If a woman becomes worse while serving time, her ability to be a good mother, sister, or employee could be affected. Video Visitation supports the parent-child relationship dynamics. Video visits could be less traumatizing for children as compared to no-contact visits.
