The Immigration Justice System (IJS) was designed by the Federal government and was designed to deal with issues surrounding immigration. There are two branches of policing in the IJS, they are Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).Both ICE and CBP are part of the larger Department of Homeland Security (DHS).CBP usually provides protection and enforcement at the border, and ICE deals with crimes or illegal activity committed by illegal immigrants inside the United States not at the border typically. If someone in the country illegally is accused of a crime, they will go to criminal court in the jurisdiction the crime occurred in.The Executive Officer for Immigration Review (EOIR) holds immigration related violation cases. When it comes to corrections for illegal immigrants, they can be incarcerated in state/local prisons, federal prisons or federal immigration detention centers(Clear, Reisig, & Cole, 2019).
According to the text, there are over 11 million people living in the Unites States without proper legal documentation.Illegal immigration refers to people who have entered or remained in the United States without the legal authority to do so.Some key issues right now in immigration are crime related to or associated with illegal immigration, terrorism related to illegal immigration, children and families of illegal immigrants, and cooperation with law enforcement by people are in the country illegally. The text reports that people involved in illegal immigration participate in crime at a lower rate than citizens. The text also reports that homegrown terrorism is a bigger risk than terrorism from illegal immigration, but that sanctuary cities came about because of coverage on terrorism and crime in association with the presidential campaign. One of the most concerning issues with illegal immigration is the effect it has on the family unit. When people are caught regarding their role in illegal immigration and held accountable, it often separates families, leaving children without their parents. The text also documents that due to increased enforcement with immigration issues, people in the country illegally are leery of the police, and therefore may be hesitant to call for help when needed(Clear, Reisig, & Cole, 2019).
The story I chose was about a man who was deported five times and facing a sixth, was handling a stolen firearm when he discharges it, killing an American citizen. His name is Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, and in San Francisco in 2015, he fired a shot that murdered 32-year-old Kate Steinle.Since his prior convictions were for drugs, and San Francisco felt they did not need to assist by complying with federal law, Garcia Zarate was free to illegally remain which resulted in this death(Mark, 2017).My feelings are that Kate would be alive today had San Francisco abided by federal law, and her they should be held accountable for their failure. Here is a link to that story:
