A clinical psychologist was interested in studying the relationship between depression and impulsiveness. She had a large number of patients who agreed to participate in the study. Each of these patients was classified as depressed or nondepressed, based upon a series of interviews and clinical instruments (questionnaires). Then each subject was asked to respond to the question, "Do you consider yourself an impulsive individual?" Below are the resulting data. The researcher's hypothesis was that depressed patients would tend to describe themselves as not impulsive, whereas non-depressed patients would tend to refer to themselves as impulsive.
