A committee is considering who to award a scholarship to: D, E, K or L. They are doing pairwise comparisons of each candidate. Each candidate is compared to every other, and assigned 1 point for a win against another candidate, and point for a tie. With 4 candidates, there are 6 pairwise comparisons to examine, so a total of 6 points. Here are the committee's thoughts:

# of committee members -> 5 5 6 4
1st L D K E
2nd D K E L
3rd K E L D
4th E L D K

So for instance, L wins against D 15 to 5, and gets 1 point.

  1. Determine the scholarship recipient.
  2. If we did pairwise voting the old way (pick two people and the winner goes to the next round) find a way of setting things up so that a different person receives the scholarship. Show all your work.
  3. Now go back to the way you did things for 1. Unfortunately, L is determined to be ineligible because she already received another scholarship. Remove L from consideration, and retabulate the results. Discuss.
