A company is planning to produce green diesel from soybean oil by the hydrotreating process. It has secured a supply of 5,000 barrels (bbl) per day of soyabean oil for the green diesel production. For this facility, you are required to estimate the following.
a) Mass flow rate of hydrogen required for green diesel production (kg/d).
b) Volumetric flow rate of hydrogen (Nm3/m3)
Following additional information is given:
1. Molecular weight of triglyceride is 895 kg/kmol
2. The average molecular weight of fatty acid is 284 kg/kmol
3. The fatty acid on triglyceride can be represented by a mixture of oleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid which have 18 carbon atom and average of two double bonds (18:2).
4. The density of biodiesel is 880 kg/m3 and that of green diesel is about 800 kg/m3
5. You can assume that hydrodeoxygenation is the main reaction for the removal of
oxygen during green diesel production.
If you find that an information is missing, make an appropriate assumption or use a
literature value.
