A company requested investigative services on suspicion that one of its workers was using the company's laptop to connect to illegal music download pages. The objective of the computer investigation was to prove that the computer and the user of the employee in question were making improper use of the Internet.
After examining several records that did not give any conclusive clue. They decided to investigate temporary internet files. (These files are those copies that the operating system saves, of the web pages that the computer user visits). Proceeding to the inspection of the temporary elements, our finding was unfortunately much more disagreeable than might have been expected. They discovered more than 20,000 images of pornographic content, much of which was child pornography.
With this discovery, on the one hand, they had the electronic evidence necessary to prove that this equipment was used for extra-work purposes and, furthermore, they had the obligation to inform the authorities of what they had discovered. Therefore, they decided to write the expert report that closed the case of computer expertise requested by the client and report what happened to the authorities. As a result of our investigation and contribution, a criminal proceeding was opened against the user of the analyzed equipment who has not yet been sentenced.
