A continuous countercurrent multistage system is used to leach oil from crushed soybeans using a hexane solvent. The bean matter is inert and remains in the underflow. The process is to treat 1000kghr of bean mass containing 400kg oil and also 25kg hexane. The inlet flow per hour of fresh solvent mixture contains 655kg hexane and 10kg oil. 60kg of oil leaves in the raffinate phase at a mass fraction of 0.119. The equilibrium relationship can be assumed to follow y=x.
a. Draw the system and label all streams.
b. Find the extraction solvent flow rate.
c. Find the oil mass fraction in the extract stream.
d. Determine the operating line coordinates.
e. Determine the number of stages needed to accomplish the leaching requirements in the problem using the McCabe Thiele method.
Hint: The extraction solvent stream is not pure. Also, the LLE we derived in class assumed the same F and S volumetric flow rates going in and out of the feed and raffinate, and extraction solvent and extract streams, respectively. Here, you have mass flow rates that will not necessary be the same going in and out of those respective streams. Perform a mass balance!
