A distillation column will be used to separate a mixture of components A, B, and C. The
column will separate the components based on volatility into three output streams: 1. the top
stream, 2, the middle stream, and 3. the bottom stream. The feed will enter the distillation
column at a rate of 450mols. The top stream only contains components A and B. The
middle and bottom streams contain a mixture of A,B, and C.
Mole percents for the feed stream and the top stream are summarized in the following table:
Additionally, the following information is known about the process:
Eighty percent of the B fed to the column exits in the top stream.
The component flow rates of A in the top and middle streams are equal.
The component flow rate of C in the bottom stream is 66molCs.
The component flow rate of B in the bottom stream is 10% of the component flow
rate of C in the bottom stream.
a) Draw a complete flowchart and label all known and unknown variables. Perform a degree
of freedom analysis.
Hint: It is recommended that you label the unknowns in the middle and bottom Streams as
component flowrates (i.e., not as total flowrates and mole fractions)
b) Calculate the following component flowrates
B in the top stream and bottom stream (mols B/s)
A in the top stream and middle stream (mols A/s)
c) Calculate the following component flowrates-
A in the bottom stream (mols As)
B in the middle stream (mols Bs)
C in the middle stream (mols Cs)
