A few rules to follow with an attendance policy regarding employees that have disabilities is to first educate yourself on the disability or ask the employee to educate you on their symptoms. For example someone has fibromyalgia which is a deterioration of joints one of the symptoms is joint pain. This can cause a person to have low mobility on cold mornings. Another rule to follow is to put yourself in their shoes. Think of the bigger picture. Employees don't want to be labeled as a disabled person with the workforce because honestly all they ever want is acceptance. People with disabilities just want to work and share in the American Dream that we were all taught was obtainable if you work hard. Many people with disabilities didn't asked to be disabled and they don't always controlled. The way to make sure the employee is not taking advantage of the attendance policy is by agreeing with the employer on a certain number of days and after that require some type of documentation from a medical provider. There are many people who will bring in a recently signed document from their medical provider already stating that this is a known issue
