Question
A grocery store has a check-out counter with ONE queue and two cashiers. One of the cashiers is with the check-out counter all the time
A grocery store has a check-out counter with ONE queue and two cashiers. One of the cashiers is with the check-out counter all the time even if there is no customer wanting to check out, call him the permanent cashier. So, if there is no customer checking out, the permanent cashier is idle. The other cashier however is NOT always with the counter, call him the temporary cashier. The temporary cashier will join the check-out counter and serve customers ONLY when a customer arriving to the counter to see that there are already FIVE customers currently waiting in the queue. The temporary cashier, jointly with the permanent cashiers, will now serve the customers waiting in the queue. The temporary cashier will LEAVE the counter when he sees no customer waiting in the queue after serving a customer. The temporary cashier will not join the counter until the above FIVE-customer rule applies again. When the temporary cashier is not serving the counter, he will be performing other duties like cleaning, stocking, etc. The interarrival times for customers arriving to the counter is exponentially distributed with a mean of 1 minute. The service times for both cashiers are exponentially distributed with a mean of 1.4 minutes. Estimate the percent of time the temporary cashier spends performing other duties. Run your model for 100,000,000 minutes. Report your statistic in the model file. Turn in your model file.
