Laws of reflection is to be verified using a plane mirror. Instruments: Plane Mirror Pape Pins Ruler Theory: When a ray of light, called the incident ray, travels in a medium and it encounters a boundary with a second medium, part of the ray is reflected back into the first medium. This means it is directed backward into the first medium. This is called reflection of light. There are two types of reflections. 1. Specular reflection is reflection from a smooth surface. The reflected rays are parallel to each other. 2. Diffuse reflection is reflection from a rough surface. The reflected rays travel in a variety of directions. Laws of Reflection: Law 1: Incident, reflected and normal meet at some point along the plane. Law 2: Angle of incident = Angle of Reflection: 201=202. The normal is a line perpendicular to the surface. It is at the point where the incident ray strikes the surface. The incident ray makes an angle of 01 with the normal. The reflected ray makes an angle of 02 with the normal normal to surface incident ray reflected ray 02=0, Page 1 of 3 364 words English (United States) Accessibility: Investigate Focus E E + 95%A H . Procedure: 1. Draw a line on the paper sheet to place the plane mirror on it. 2. Draw the normal perpendicular to the surface of the mirror. 3. Draw incident rays with different angles on both sides of the normal. 4. Place the plane mirror on the paper and put two pins in front of it. 5. Observe reflection of light from the plane mirror and image of the pins. Place other two pins on the reverse side to align to the images points. 7. Repeat the experiment for all incident rays of light and find image points. 8. Remove the pins and plane mirror from the paper sheet. 9. Measure the angles of incidence and reflection for different rays. 10. Compare the measurement values to verify the laws of reflection.
