A heavy metallic ball of weight W is released from the height of L to the center and end of the plate which is fixed

  1. A heavy metallic ball of weight W is released from the height of L to the center and end of the plate which is fixed to the cantilever shaft, as shown. The length of the shaft and the plate are both L. The radius of the shaft is 0.1L and the plate cross-section is 0.1L x 0.025L. Both the shaft and the plate are made from Stainless Steel 316L, with a Modulus' of Elasticity E, and Shear Modules of G-E/2. (Ignore the small amount of the length for the plate that has been penetrated into the shaft and assume its effective length as L; similarly, consider the effective length of the shaft as L)

  2. a) Where are the points/points of maximum bending stress and maximum shear stress on the shaft? [2 Points]

  3. b) Assume L = 1m, E = 200 GPa, and find the maximum bending stress and maximum shear stress on the shaft. [6 Points]

  4. c) Find the maximum Von Mises Stress for this shaft. [6 Points]

  5. d) Find the maximum shear and bending stress for the plate.
