A liquid feed stream (Feed 1) contains 40% of butadiene (B), 30% of iso-pentane (1) and 30% of ethane (E) in mole basis. This feed stream enters a separation unit 1 operating at steady state. In separation unit 1, overhead product contains 90 wt% of ethane and the rest is butadiene while the bottom product contains no ethane. A new feed stream (Feed 2) containing 50 wt% of butadiene and iso-pentane each is added to the bottom product stream prior feeding into the separation unit 2 (steady state). The mass flow for Feed 2 is 1.5kg/s. In the separation unit 2, The overhead product contains 90 wt% of butadiene and the bottom product contains 0.98 wt% of iso-pentane. (MW: butadiene = 54.09g/mol; iso-pentane = 72.15g/mol; ethane = 30.07g/mol) (a) Given the molar flow rate of the feed stream (Feed 1) is 100 mol/s, determine composition of Feed 1 in wt% for each component. (4 marks) ) (b) Draw a process flowchart for the above separation process. Label all the streams using the information and symbols provided. Other unknowns should be consistently labelled using suitable symbols. (9 marks) (c) Conduct the degree-of-freedom analysis by listing down the variables based on the symbols used in (b). (3 marks) 3 (d) Determine the total mass flow rate and mass fraction of each stream in the flowchart. (9 marks)
