A main idea that stood out to me is that teaming is different for everyone. There are formal teams, like sports teams, that know each other well (Edmondson 2017). Then there are some teams that are more spontaneously put together, that don't know each other well. However, they have a common goal and work together to reach it, like caregivers and TV animators/writers. This stuck out to me because it made me realize that teaming is not going to be the same for everyone.
Another main idea that stood out to me is the fact that teaming isn't always easy or smooth. It takes time, curiosity, and the drive to learn to be able to reach your goal. You might have some conflict with some people, but you need to be willing to have an open mind and work it out. Amy Edmondson states a quote by Abraham Lincoln that stood out to me, "I don't like that man very much. I must get to know him better." This kind of perspective is helpful to have when you're struggling within your group. This stood out to me because it made me realize that while there could be some complications along the way, having an open mind and communicating ultimately allows you to accomplish your goals.
B) During my freshman year of Highschool I was a part of a debate team in English class.
1. We all happened to be fairly quiet and introverted students, so the forming was pretty difficult. I was assigned the leader, though I can't remember a specific reason why. "Many factors influence how the forming stage of group development plays out. The personalities of the individuals in the group, the skills that members bring, the resources available to the group, the group's size, and the group's charge all contribute to the creation of the early tone of and climate within a group" (Ellis & Fisher, 1994). In my group, we were only three, which was pretty easy considering that we were all pretty similar as students and thought alike. During the storming stage, it was when we were gathering evidence for our debate. This was difficult, as we needed to find good evidence while getting rid of some unnecessary ones. During the norming stage, everything fell into place. We all had our roles and worked together to form our arguments and evidence. While the debate was coming to an end, the performing stage allowed us to get last-minute tasks done while working together. When we finished our debate, we were at the adjourning stage. We were no longer a group for a debate but remained friendly.
2. We experienced all the stages in order. (Forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning)
3. We stayed at the norming stage the most, as the debate unit took a while. This meant that we spent a lot of time working together when our group was solidified.
