A plant must distill a 1000kg/h mixture containing 10 mole percent acetone and 90 mole percent water. The overhead product is to contain 90 mole percent acetone and the bottom product less than 100ppm acetone. Other data are as follows: Temperature of feed =35C Temparature of distillate =25C Temperature of bottoms =100C Reflux rate =1110kg/h Estimate the cooling water required for the distillation operation. Given that: Steam is available at 25psig(274kN/m2 abs), dry saturated. The rise in cooling water temperature is limited to 30C. Column operates at 1 bar. Latent heat acetone at 52.5C=600kJ/kg Latent heat water at 52.5C=2200kJ/kg Heat capacity data, average values: Acetone: 25C to 35C=2.2kJ/kgK Water: 25C to 100C=4.2kJ/kgK Boiling point of 90 per cent acetone/water =52.5C
