A. Please read the following situation statement and answer the questions that follow:

You travel frequently with your coworker to visit clients. Your coworker likes to purchase meals and drinks on the flights. He always charges everything to his corporate credit card, which he then submits as a business expense as part of his travel expense report. Up until now you have looked the other way at these expenditures because they just represented a tiny fraction of each client's bill.

  1. At what point should your coworker's expenditures be considered fraudulent and why? Do you have the responsibility to report him, and if so to whom?
  2. Does the relative cost of the expenditures to the overall contract affect your evaluation?
  3. If the drinks he orders on the flights are alcoholic beverages, does that affect your evaluation?
  4. You confront your coworker the next time he does this. He acknowledges wrongdoing and agrees to repay the expenses after the trip. Would you feel obligated to report him or consider the situation resolved based on his words?
  5. What theories of fraud did you implement in your evaluation of this case and why?

B. Please answer each of the following questions in paragraph form providing examples and support from the chapter readings and other sources:

  1. What is the difference between fraud and human error?
  2. Compare and contrast fraud auditing with forensic accounting.
  3. Is there evidence to support the notion that instances of fraud have increased at a rapid rate? Provide insight into the driver(s) of this issue.
