A power company needs to connect a new power plant 5 mi outside town to the grid. Ideally, they'd connect it with a line, but the plant is 4 mi inside the woods. It costs more money tosecure right of way through the woods, to cut down trees, etc. The only way to avoid thewoods is to run wires parallel to a straight highway that passes between the town and thewoods. The furthest they'd want to run wires along the highway is 3 mi. If it costs $250/ft torun lines outside the woods, and $850/ft to run lines within them, how far should they run aline outside the woods, and how far through it? See diagram on back.
