A project to be submitted with the final exam on January 20,2024
Assigned date: December 21,2023
SLO: 1
A gas stream from a process plant that contains acetone as an organic vapor and is delivered to a flare to convert all of the acetone into carbon dioxide and water in order to prevent air pollution. Because acetone is a valuable chemical, we must consider if we could design an acetone recovery system and incorporate it into the process. The waste stream contains 687 moles of air per hour and 10.3 moles of acetone per hour. Follow the steps below to implement a possible design recovery system to complete a task assigned to you by your employer:
Step 1: Assume we will recover 100 percent of the acetone. Calculate the economic potential of the project if the acetone price is $0.27 per pound and the plant runs for 8150 hours per year.
Step 2: Determine if the process should be batch or continuous.
Step 3: Which processes are available in the literature for the purpose of recovering vapor from a gas stream?
Step 4: What solvents are available if absorption is the cheapest option you selected in step three? Which solvent will be utilized, and why?
Step 5: What is the next unit that will be used to separate the acetone from the solvent?
Step 6: Draw a qualitative flow chart of the process, including all required equipment such as pumps and heat exchangers, as well as a unit for solvent waste treatment.
Step 7: Redraw the flow chart indicated in step 6 with the recycle stream if you decide to recycle the solvent.
Step 8: What are the benefits and drawbacks of the processes listed in steps 6 and 7 with respect to environmental impact and project profitability?
