A researcher is interested in finding out if frustration leads to aggression in children. He brings each child individually into a laboratory that is set up like a play room, full of new and shiny toys that children like and want to play with. The researcher tells one group (Group A or the experimental group) of children that they are not allowed to play or even touch the toys. The other group (Group B or the control group) of children are allowed to roam the room play and touch any of the toys they want. The researcher assumes that children in Group A will experience frustration, and children in Group B will not experience frustration. Behind a one way mirror, the researcher also observes the behavior of children that indicates aggression, by counting the number of cuss words the children use, and the number of times they hit the table with their closed fist. The researcher find the following:

  • Group A: Number of cuss words used: Mean = 3.25; Number of times hit the table with closed fist: 3.15
  • Group B: Number of cuss words used: Mean = 2.75; Number of times hit the table with closed fist: Mean: 2.05

Please provide your response to the following:

  • State the complete null hypothesis; (4 point)
  • State the complete research hypothesis; (4 point)
  • By just looking at the numbers reported for Group A and Group B above, is it possible to say that the results show significant difference between the two groups when it comes to exhibiting acts of aggression? Why or why not? (8 points)
  • Identify 2 other possible variables besides aggression that could impact the result of this research study (e.g. What other factors can result in acts aggression by children in this study); and for each variable you identify, explain if it could increase the value of the sample mean or decrease the value of the sample mean, and why? (4 points)
