A researcher is working with a theory concerning the functions of some particular structure found in rat's brains. The structure is bilaterally symmetric, so lesions of the structure can be produced on either or both sides of the brain. The researcher believes that the effect of lesions on performance on some particular task will be different depending upon whether the lesions are on the right side of the brain or on the left side or on both sides. 120 rats were randomly divided into four groups. The dependent variable was performance on the task.

Group 1: received no lesions.

Group 2: lesion in the right side of the brain

Group 3: lesion in the left side of the brain.

Group 4: lesions in both sides.
