A researcher randomly assigns college freshmen to either of two experimental conditions. Because both groups consist of college freshmen, someone claims that it is appropriate to use a t-test for the two related samples. Is this correct?

*Previous responses to this question indicate they are related, but I am not sure. Does anyone have further advice? Thank you.*

*I thought that t-tests were for comparing one condition to a known average, or, one condition or treatment to one group, and not to another group, then comparing the means of each. I thought that even though the freshmen are somewhat related, they would be two groups, experiencing two different experimental conditions - so the t-test would not apply. Please advise, thank you.
