A sleep researcher conducts an experiment to determine whether a hypnotic drug called Drowson, which is advertised as a remedy for insomnia, actually does promote sleep. In addition, the researcher is interested in whether a tolerance to the drug develops with chronic use. The design of the experiment is a 2 x 2 factorial independent groups design. One of the variables is the concentration of Drowson. There are two levels: (1) zero concentration (placebo) and (2) the manufacturer's minimum recommended dosage. The other variable concerns the previous use of Drowson. Again there are two levels: (1) subjects with no previous use and (2) chronic users. Sixteen individuals with sleep-onset insomnia (difficulty in falling asleep) who have had no previous use of Drowson are randomly assigned to the two concentration conditions such that there are eight subjects in each condition. Sixteen chronic users of Drowson are also assigned randomly to the two conditions, eight subjects per condition. All subjects take their prescribed "medication" for three consecutive nights, and the time they fall asleep is recorded. The scores shown in the following table are the mean times in minutes to fall asleep for each subject, averaged over the 3 days:

I have calculated a two-way anova and the results are partially displayed below. Your job is to fill in the missing numbers under the column MS, Fobt, Fcrit, Omega squared and Cogen's F. Also answer the questions below the table.

Compute all necessary subsequent tests using the Tukey test.

Fill in the table below (refer to the example I posted, and the power point examples) with the correct entries DO NOT ROUND your numbers until you get your results

Source SS df MS Fobt Fcrit Omega squared Cohen'sF
prevUse 639.031 1
Dose 979.031 1
prevUse x Dose 472.781 1
Error 1538.125 28

Fill in the blank.

  1. The number in the source table above that is the average variance within each group is ___

  1. The number in the source table above that is the variability of the cell means around the grand mean after the variance due to the main effects are subtracted is ___

  1. The number in the source table above that is the denominator of all the F tests. ____

6. (13 points) The means below are from a hypothetical study of the role of drive level and drugs on the learning performance of monkeys. The animals are given a series of 20 "oddity" problems. In this task, three objects (two of the same, one different). Are presented to the monkeys, and the subjects task is to learn to select the non-duplicated or odd object. A food reward is placed in a food well underneath the correct object. A trial consists of the presentation of three objects and the monkey's selection of one of them. The response measure Y is the number of errors in 20 trials of training. One of the independent variables Factor A consists of a Control and two Drug conditions, and the other variable Factor B is the drive level of animals, either 1 hour of food deprivation of 24 hours of food deprivation. Four moneys are randomly assigned to each treatment combination. The mean number of errors for each condition are presented below along with the results of the analysis of variance.

Write in the appropriate Omega Square and Cohen's F values above next to the associated factor. Also answer the following questions

  1. Which number above is the average variance within each of the groups?

  1. What number above is the variability of the main effect drug means around the grand mean ?

The interaction is significant. For the significant interaction, test the simple effect of Motivation (food deprivation-one hr vs. 24 hrs) at each level of drug using the Tukey and the Fischer's LSD and write out your conclusions separately for each test.
