A small town in South Carolina has a paper factory, PaperTown, which releases toxic fumes into the atmosphere. This factory however, employs the majority of people in the town. For decades the air has smelled like rotten eggs and the pollution from the factory even reaches several surrounding towns. Most of the retirees from the factory have breathing/lung problems as a result of the fumes. Although it is clear to everyone that this factory needs to change or be shut down, the towns citizens feel that they cannot afford to have it shut down as this provides the only major employment in the surrounding area within a 60-mile radius. The citizens believe that this company provides the greatest good for the greatest number of people in the community and have actively thwarted attempts to shut it down by various federal and state agencies.
The company pays slightly lower wages than they have to because they use a shareholder model. A new CEO has just come on board from an industry leader outside the area. They are considering how the company can best eliminate the toxic fumes and thus change the company. The CEO wants you to present them with an explanation of the companys social responsibility (because there is no current CSR policy) and the ethical issues involved and provide some suggestions.
Checklist for your explanation to the new CEO:
Referring to CSR initiatives, identify which pillars of responsibility they have neglected: economic, legal, ethical, or philanthropic. Define the two pillars.
Discuss the current ethical and corporate social responsibility (CSR) concerns at PaperTown. Give at least two specific examples.
Discuss the purpose of instituting CSR and ethics at PaperTown.
Contrast the existing ethical reasoning the company employees seem to use with a preferred ethical approach from the reading.
Using your preferred ethical approach, explore how the company could address the CSR and ethical issues.
Your submission must include a minimum of two references. The first being the course textbook, and the second is an article from the database ABI/INFORM Collection in the PG Library. Any additional articles must also derive from the database ABI/INFORM Collection. Cite using in-text citations where appropriate. Your sources and content should follow current APA format and citation style. Visit the Academic Success Center found in the Academic Tools area in your course for further assistance.CORPORATE SOCIAL
