A standard design agitated vessel of 2 m in diameter is used to continuously stirred an aqueous solution of 40% NaOH at 60 C which has a viscosity and density of 1.2 x 102Pas and 1450 kg/m respectively. To complete the design a turbine with four pitched blades of 0.7 m in diameter is mounted centrally in the baffled tank. a) Determine the suitable speed (revolution per second) of the turbine impeller for a fully turbulent condition which exhibit Reynolds number of 100,000. Subsequently, suggest the power required for the impeller. (5 marks) b) The same agitated vessel is used to mix a synthetic latex compound having a viscosity and density of 120 Pa-s and 1100 kg/m respectively. By applying the same impeller speed as in a), determine the power required for this system. (3 marks) c) Comment on the suitability of existing agitated vessel design for the fluid considered in part b) (4 marks) Table B Values of constants and K, for baffled tanks K.
