A student at a large state university was dismissed from a masters degree program in counseling psychology due to a failing grade in a mandatory internship program. The handbook for the program explained a passing grade in the internship was mandatory in order to graduate from the program. The internship was supervised by a professor at the University and a clinician at the off-campus site where the internship took place. The clinician however was responsible for checking attendance of the student and providing weekly updates of the students progress to the professor and assigning both written and work related task. The clinician was seldom available and the student was permitted to initial her own attendance sheet as well as draft her weekly updates herself to give to the professor. After awarding a passing grade, the clinician later discovered that none of the assigned tasks have been completed and gave the student a failing grade. The student was dismissed from the program.
