A study is conducted to compare the length of time between men and women to assemble a certain product. Past experience indicates that the distribution of times for both men and women is approximately normal but the variance of times fro women is less than that for men. A random sample of times for 11 men and 14 women produced the following data shown in the table below. Test the hypothesis that the variance for men = variance for women against the alternative that the variances for men are greater than the variance for women. Use alpha at .01 level of significance. Answer the following questions. What is the calculated F value (F*)? What is the Critical F value ? What is the final decision based on the analysis?
Men | Women |
sample size (n) = 11 | sample size (n) = 14 |
Standard deviation = 6.1 | standard deviation = 5.3 |
