A tank for the storage of Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) is to be acquired. There is a requirement to make a preliminary assessment of the hazards involved. A starting point is a sketch of the installation which provides the basis for a simple ETBA. Concentrated Sodium Hydroxide is to be stored in a copper tank. At low temperatures the lye is viscous and heating equipment using an electric current is required to ensure adequate flow. The tank is filled using a pipe equipped with a continuously variable valve. On top of the tank there is a manhole with a pressure seal and a breather pipe with a pressure relief valve. Under the tank there is a pit. A ladder has been permanently installed to provide access to the tank. A tube which is used to tap the liquid is not visible on the sketch. Note: Sodium Hydroxide is caustic and corrosive in all its forms. Its 8-Hour TWA is 2mg/m. The chemical is also a good conductor of electricity.
