A teacher, who is a member of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, was concerned about the presence of several books in the library that allegedly promoted spirituality and religion over atheism. The teacher instructed several students to check out the books and to never return them. The teacher stated that she would pay the library fine associated with the missing books. The books include: The Light Within You God Thinks you are Wonderful As You Grow Give God your Worries All Creation Waits The Story of Ruth After becoming aware of the teacher's actions, a parent contacted the school principal to complain. The principal stated that they also had concerns about the books, that the words in the book were offensive and violent toward non-believers, and that they supported the teacher's actions. If the parents filed suit claiming viewpoint discrimination, under what conditions may a book be removed from a school library? Does your school district have a policy for the removal of books? If so, under what conditions can a book be removed from a public school library? If you do not work for a school district or your district does not have such a policy, state the conditions, if any, where you would consider removing books from a public school library. Is there a difference between the authority of school officials to remove books from the school library versus the authority to remove books from an English course? Why or why not
