A three-phase, 6-pole, Y-connected synchronous generator is rated at 120 MVA, 13.8 kV, 0.85-PF-lagging, and 60 Hz. Compute the following: 1. If the full load (at rated conditions) efficiency of the generator is, 85.4 % and then find the value of armature resistance . The mechanical, core and electrical loses are selected such that is positive. The mechanical and core losses are independent of the load; however, the electrical losses change with load current. 2. Determine the input and induced torques of the generator. 3. If the speed and field current of the machine are kept constant and = 5 then find the exact full load voltage regulation. Also sketch the phasor diagram and find the torque angle of the machine. It is pertinent to mention here that can not be ignored in this problem. 4. For the full range of the generator operation, i.e., no load to full load, compute the efficiency and voltage regulation of the generator. Use MATLAB to plot the efficiency and voltage regulation as a function of load current. Also plot the terminal voltage of the machine against the load current. 5. Provide a detailed discussion of the results obtained in part 5. Also determine that at what load the machine is the most efficient and why? 6. Consulting the literature and considering the above constraints discuss the possibility of increasing the efficiency of the synchronous generator.
